Crap. I've come to the conclusion that the current hardware implementation is less than ideal. The problem is that I can't seem to get the speed I want when doing inter-mcu communication in software. Therefore, I've decided to try swapping the two mcus for a single, 40 pin one instead. This means I have to redesign the PCB, which will take some time.
